The grand stone structure that stands before us is a true symbol of Southgate’s history. This is Christ Church, a magnificent gothic masterpiece built in 1862 by the renowned architect, Sir Gilbert Scott. This church, with its imposing architecture and sense of peace, has been a cornerstone of the community for over 150 years.

Its history goes back even further to the early 17th century when a small chapel stood in its place. This chapel was founded by Sir John Weld in 1615 and was known as Weld Chapel. This was a time when Enfield Chase, a vast hunting ground for the King, was the heart of the local village. It was a place of solace and spiritual guidance for the local people.

The original Weld Chapel was sadly demolished in 1862 to make way for the grand Christ Church we see today. However, some parts of the chapel were saved – the bells still ring out to announce a new beginning. They are a reminder of the past that continues to resonate in the vibrant community of Southgate.

As you stand here, you can almost feel the echo of those past lives – the villagers attending services, the children playing amongst the ancient oaks, and the stories that have been whispered in the hallowed halls.

Look closely at the church exterior, and you will see some fascinating details. The clock on the tower was added to commemorate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. Step inside, and your eyes will be met with a stunning collection of pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows. It’s the largest collection in all of London, crafted by the renowned Morris, Marshall Faulkner & Co. It’s a reminder of the enduring beauty of Southgate’s past and a beacon of hope for a bright future.
