Is it possible for a volcano to transform into a fortress? Here at Takapuna Head, it did. This dramatic headland has a history that stretches back millennia. It also commands stunning views of Auckland’s harbor. Takapuna Head is more than just a pretty place. It’s a place of immense cultural and historical significance.

Let’s step back in time to discover Takapuna Head’s secrets. Maori settlement in the Auckland region began around the 13th or 14th centuries. The Devonport Takapuna area was among the first settled. This land was known to be settled by the Tamaki Maori ancestor Peretu. Around 1350, the Tainui migratory canoe arrived at Takapuna. The crew stopped at a freshwater spring southwest of Maungauika/North Head. Some members decided to stay permanently. Taikehu intermarried with the people of the North Shore. Kainga settlements were found throughout the wider Takapuna area. They were protected by pa fortifications at Castor Bay and Takarunga/Mount Victoria.

Let’s consider the name Takapuna. Hoturoa of the Tainui waka named a spring at Maungauika / North Head. He remembered a spring in his homeland of Hawaiki. Puna means natural springs in Maori. The meaning of taka is unknown. It has been interpreted as Knoll Spring, Rock Spring, Cliff Spring or Falling Spring.

Lake Pupuke also plays a role in the history of Takapuna Head. Lake Pupuke was an important location for Tamaki Maori. It was used as a source of fresh water. Its name Pupuke Moana means Overflowing Sea. This refers to how the fresh water flowed out from the lake to the sea.

Now let’s fast forward to the 1880s. Takapuna became a tourist destination. Lake Pupuke was the main attraction. Tourists encouraged farmers to subdivide their lands. Large summer residences were constructed on the shores of the lake. By the late 1900s, Takapuna Beach became more popular than Lake Pupuke.

Did you know a private tramway was established here in 1910? Local businessmen hoped to improve property prices in Takapuna. The Takapuna Tramways and Ferry Company Limited was then established. It operated both the tram and ferry. The plan was successful. Suburban development in Takapuna rapidly increased.

The opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 1959 was important. It created a road between the North Shore and Auckland City. Suburban growth exploded across the North Shore. Takapuna became the administrative center for Takapuna City in 1961. Later, it became the administrative center for North Shore City in 1989.

Today, Takapuna Head stands as a testament to the rich history of this region. From its Maori origins to its role as a military defense. From its popularity as a tourist destination to its current status as a vibrant community. Takapuna Head has seen it all. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of history. Remember the stories of the people who have shaped this landscape.
