Sunlight glints off the Sol Sculpture. It’s a striking piece right here in Copenhagen. The Sol Sculpture isn’t just a static object. It represents a fascinating story. Created in 1969 by Ole Christensen, the Sol Sculpture captures the dynamic movement of starling murmurations, the “Black Sun”. This breathtaking natural phenomenon is beautifully depicted in the mural by Søren Solkær and Henrik Soten. Solkær, a Danish photographer, chose this motif as a tribute to Copenhagen, the city he’s called home since the mid-nineties. The mural on Tønder Street in Copenhagen depicts a photograph taken in the Tønder marshland, a nod to Solkær’s childhood. This Sol Sculpture and accompanying mural were part of a larger celebration commemorating the 100-year anniversary of Southern Jutland’s reunion with Denmark. The mural itself is a collaboration between Solkær and the graffiti artist Henrik Soten. Soten brought Solkær’s vision to life on a grand scale. Solkær, a graduate of FAMU in Prague, is known for his portraits of celebrities like Amy Winehouse and Paul McCartney. This venture into street art isn’t his first foray into the art form. In 2012, he embarked on a three-year project called SURFACE. He photographed 160 street artists worldwide, culminating in a book and numerous exhibitions. The Sol Sculpture mural stands as a testament to the beauty of nature and the power of collaboration. It’s a vibrant addition to Copenhagen’s urban landscape.
