Curious how a simple park got its unusual name? Let’s explore Roanoke Park in Seattle. This 2.2-acre park offers a green escape between Capitol Hill and Portage Bay.

Roanoke Park’s story begins with David T. Denny and Henry Fuhrman. They named it after Roanoke, Virginia. The City of Seattle bought the land in 1908. It became a haven for hikers and bicyclists. They could rest and turn around while enjoying the Interlaken Park trails.

Roanoke Park is more than just a green space. It is the focal point of its neighborhood. Gracious homes surround the park on three sides. Tenth Avenue E borders it to the south. The park provides respite from the nearby I-5 freeway and State Route 520.

The Roanoke Park neighborhood has a rich history. In 2009, it gained recognition as a historic district. The National Register of Historic Places added it to their list. The Roanoke Park Historic District includes E Shelby Street, E Roanoke Street, Harvard Avenue E, and 10th Avenue E.

Architectural styles from the early 20th century define the area. You can see Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and Craftsman homes. American Foursquare and Italian Renaissance styles are also present. Some houses blend these styles.

Several local architects designed homes here. Names like Bebb & Gould and Victor W. Voorhees contributed. Elizabeth Ayer designed some of the landscapes.

Streetcars played a vital role in Roanoke Park’s development. By 1906, the Union Trunk Line served the neighborhood. It connected the area to downtown Seattle. This encouraged property development. Roanoke Park became an early streetcar suburb.

The park’s location has always been important. Early Native Americans used the area. They maintained open ground for cultivating roots. This area was called baqWab.

Over time, Roanoke Park adapted to changes. The construction of I-5 and SR 520 impacted the neighborhood. Despite these changes, the area retains its charm.

Today, Roanoke Park offers a place to relax. It is a reminder of the neighborhood’s past. Take a stroll and imagine the early days of Seattle. Think about the hikers and bicyclists who once used this park. Consider the history that surrounds you here in Roanoke Park.
