Right here, in the heart of Garland, is a legacy of faith that began in the most humble of places: Blaylock’s Nursery. From the moment they gathered in 1961, a small group of 30 individuals dreamed of building a spiritual home for their community. This is the story of Lavon Drive Baptist Church, a beacon of hope that grew from a whispered prayer to a bustling hub of worship and service. The name changed to Lavon Drive Baptist Church, and with it, a dedication to spreading the Gospel resonated in the heart of Garland. In those formative years, the church faced the obstacle of limited space, but with unwavering faith, they built a 150-seat auditorium and started a new chapter. This was a church that embraced all its members, nurturing a sense of connection and community. In the 1960s, the church continued to grow, culminating in the construction of a 650-seat auditorium and an expansive educational wing in 1965. Through the tireless efforts of the men in the church, a dedicated preschool space opened its doors in 1968, and the expansion of the Keyes building added a fellowship hall and classrooms in 1972. They realized their dream, a large enough space, and a Christian day school began its journey, shaping young minds and hearts. As the church expanded into the 1980s, it embraced different ministries including caring for the elderly, extending a helping hand to those who spoke Spanish, and incorporating AWANA, the longest-running AWANA program in Texas. By the 2000s, an impressive, state-of-the-art educational building, dedicated to Dr. Coleman, provided the right space for adult discipleship and for Garland Christian Academy. In recognition of his enduring influence, a young man named Robby Greene walked through the doors of Lavon Drive in 1997 as a maintenance and grounds intern. His journey would end in 2014 when, after decades of dedicated service, he became the Senior Pastor, carrying the torch of faith forward into the future. Their legacy continues in the heart of Garland, a church that has etched its mark on the city, shaping generations of believers and inspiring the community with its commitment to God’s word. Lavon Drive is more than a place of worship: it’s a testament to enduring faith, a place where hearts are united, and lives are forever changed.
