What if a mosque could transport you to Uzbekistan? The Masjid Gunadarma, also known as the Imam Al-Bukhari Mosque, stands as a unique testament to cultural exchange and architectural innovation right here in Jakarta. It is a story of collaboration, a journey of discovery and a symbol of friendship between Indonesia and Uzbekistan.
The story of Masjid Gunadarma begins with a trip. In March 2020, professors and students from Gunadarma University’s Faculty of Architecture traveled to Uzbekistan. Their mission was to study the historical architecture of Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent. They wanted to learn the secrets of these ancient cities. They wanted to bring some of that magic back to Indonesia.
Funded entirely by Gunadarma University, this ambitious project took shape under the guidance of key figures. The Chancellor of Gunadarma University and the Ambassador of Tourism of Uzbekistan in Indonesia, Mrs. Eko Sri Margianti, were instrumental in bringing this vision to life.
The result is breathtaking. Masjid Gunadarma showcases a distinctive Uzbek architectural style. The mosque’s design reflects the knowledge gained from the study tour. It incorporates elements of traditional Uzbek construction. The mosque serves as a tangible reminder of the collaboration between the two countries.
Measuring 9×9 meters internally, with a 12×12 meter selasar area, Masjid Gunadarma also features a unique detail. The mosque seems to float above a pond. This pond is fed by a natural spring located behind the mosque. This adds to the mosque’s tranquil atmosphere.
The Embassy of Uzbekistan contributed to the mosque’s decoration. They presented photographs of the walls of the Koran “Mushaf Utsmam”. Also photos of the Hazrati Imam and Imam al-Bukhari complex. These were obtained with assistance from various Uzbekistani organizations.
Masjid Gunadarma isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of the strong ties between Indonesia and Uzbekistan. It represents a shared appreciation for Islamic culture and architecture. It stands as a testament to the power of international collaboration.
