“Noodle Routine” a captivating title isn’t it? That’s just one of the many intriguing works showcased at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Sculpture. This isn’t just any sculpture. It’s a testament to Singapore’s burgeoning contemporary art scene. It’s a vibrant piece reflecting the energy of the artists and their collaboration.

The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Sculpture isn’t a single static object. Think of it as a living space for artistic expression. It’s where the Sculpture Society of Singapore and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) joined forces. Their collaboration fostered a unique mentorship program. Six young artists honed their skills under the guidance of established mentors. The results were breathtaking.

The mentorship challenged these young talents to explore new perspectives. The emphasis was on pushing boundaries in both theory and practice. The artists developed critical viewpoints regarding visual art. They examined sculpture and 3D art within the context of local and Southeast Asian art. The process wasn’t easy. The pandemic brought its share of hurdles. Some artists were based overseas making collaboration difficult. Despite these challenges their dedication shone through.

Their creations were then displayed at the reTHINGing Materiality Contemporary Sculpture 2021 exhibition. This major exhibition at the Lim Hak Tai Gallery truly showcased the evolution of sculpture. The exhibition redefined what constitutes sculpture. The works ranged from traditional figurative sculptures and abstract pieces to cutting-edge new media art.

The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Sculpture is more than a display. It’s a snapshot of Singapore’s artistic journey. Other works shown included “Time for a Trim” by Palmer Tan Long Hao and “Strangely Familiar” by Xin Xiaochang. Subashri Sankarasubramanian’s “Eat my Smelly Flowers: A Still Life” and Wong Gin Ming’s “Something like you” added unique perspectives. Ong Si Hui’s “1/32 Spherical Net” and “1/48² Spherical Wedge” showcased precision and innovation. Monica Peh’s “-ING” and Chen Yanyi’s “Geo-Palmistry” brought further diversity. Nyan Soe’s “The shadow of memory” and Lim Soo Ngee’s “Epoch of the Wayang Buffoon” explored deeper themes. Stauffer Anne’s “Does it matter?” and Amber Phang’s “Connection in balance” added to the complexity. Finally Gan Kwang Chuen’s “Cosmo Prayer Wheel” completed the diverse range of the exhibition.

The exhibition also extended its reach into the digital world. A 360-degree video showcased the artworks online. This hybrid format was part of the Southeast Asian Arts Forum 2021. The online platform broadened the reach of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Sculpture’s message. It allowed audiences worldwide to engage with the artwork. An e-publication further documented the artists’ reflections. Their insightful commentaries explored the complexities of contemporary sculpture.

The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Sculpture isn’t just a collection. It’s a story of collaboration resilience and innovation. It’s a symbol of Singapore’s vibrant art scene. It’s a testament to the power of art to connect people across borders and cultures. So take a moment. Appreciate the artistic journey represented here. Let this collection inspire you.
