Tucked away in Istanbul, the Tatbikat Cami whispers stories of centuries past. The Tatbikat Cami, also known as the Sivasi Tekkesi Mescidi or Yavsi Baba Mescidi, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule, connecting us to the reign of Sultan Beyazid II. He commissioned this mosque, laying the foundation for what would become a vital spiritual center. Later, during the reign of Mehmed III, a Sivaslı Şeyh Abdülmecit Efendi added a minber, further enriching the mosque’s character. The Tatbikat Cami stands as a testament to his contribution, forever linking his name to this sacred space. The mosque also has a unique connection to education. It serves as the practice mosque for the International Fatih Sultan Mehmet Imam Hatip High School. Imagine young students honing their skills and deepening their understanding of faith within these historic walls. The Tatbikat Cami isn’t isolated. It’s part of a rich tapestry of history. Across the street lies the Yavsi Baba Haziresi, a cemetery linked to the Yavsi Baba Tekkesi. The tekke’s founder has a fascinating lineage. He was Muhyiddin Muhammed Efendi of İskilip, father of Ebusuud Efendi, Şeyhülislam and son-in-law of the renowned scholar Ali Kuşçu from the time of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. Yavsi Baba himself earned his nickname, meaning “gentle father,” from Beyazid II, recognizing his dedication to knowledge. The tekke later became known as the Sivasi Tekkesi after Abdülmecid Sivasi became the Halveti leader in 1576. And beneath the Tatbikat Cami lies the Sultan Sarnıcı, a historical cistern now used for events and gatherings. So, the next time you find yourself near Turna Sokak and Yavuz Selim Caddesi, take a detour to the Tatbikat Cami. It’s more than just a mosque. It’s a living testament to Istanbul’s vibrant past, a place where history, faith, and education intertwine.
