Deep within the Mallorcan countryside lies Son Caulelles, a silent sentinel of the island’s distant past. This isn’t just a cave; it’s a portal to the Bronze Age, a time long before the Romans or Moors set foot on this sun-kissed isle. Son Caulelles whispers tales of the navetiforme culture, a people who thrived here between 1700 and 1000 BC. Imagine them, these early inhabitants, carving this very chamber directly into the rock. Son Caulelles served as a tomb, a final resting place for an entire clan or family. The small, rounded doorway we see today was once their passage to the afterlife. Inside, the cave stretches 10 meters long, 2.5 meters wide, and 1.8 meters high. A central pit, surrounded by lateral benches, dominates the interior. These benches, marked by small ridges, likely held the bodies of the deceased. A small, circular niche near the entrance acted as an altar for offerings. Perhaps jewelry, ceramics, weapons, or simple crockery accompanied these ancient souls on their final journey. Son Caulelles held its secrets close for centuries. The first whispers of its existence reached the modern world between 1915 and 1920, thanks to the work of V. Furió and J. Colomines. Later, in 1927, archaeologist W. Hemp unearthed an outer wall and a trench near the entrance. Sadly, no artifacts remained within, lost to the plunderers of time. But the very stones of Son Caulelles still speak. They tell us of rituals and reverence, of life and death in a world vastly different from our own.
