Two hundred years ago this land was empty farmland. A single railway track ran through it. People dug clay to make bricks. That’s all there was. A few farmhouses and outbuildings dotted the landscape. This is the Imperial College London White City Campus. Can you imagine it?
Then in 1908 everything changed. Imre Kiralfy a Jewish-Hungarian émigré saw an opportunity. London was crazy about public exhibitions. Kiralfy transformed 140 acres into a ‘Great White City’. He built 120 exhibition buildings and 20 pavilions. They were covered in white plaster. It was a shimmering stucco fantasy. The Disneyland of its day. Two underground stations opened. People came from all over the world. Even a team of physicists from Imperial College London was there. They showcased science and technology at the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition.
After the Second World War things changed again. Exhibitions ended. Social housing projects took their place. White City became famous for ambitious housing developments. In 1960 the BBC opened its Television Centre. It became a cultural and artistic hub. Queens Park Rangers a world-famous football club also set up here. Westfield the largest shopping centre in Europe arrived later. White City has always been at the forefront of new ideas and community ambition.
Today the Imperial College London White City Campus stands as a testament to that spirit. It’s at the heart of the White City Innovation District. Academics conduct groundbreaking research. They turn their ideas into new ventures. Businesses big and small lead the world in areas like quantum engineering clean energy and machine learning. The campus is close to Hammersmith Hospital. They run clinical trials on dementia cancer infectious diseases and therapeutics.
The campus is a result of collaboration. Imperial College London partnered with the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. In 2017 the council launched an industrial strategy. It aimed for ‘Economic Growth for Everyone’. The result? Billions of pounds of investment and hundreds of companies came to the area. Students and researchers benefit from links to public and private partners. Their research makes a real difference.
The impact is global. But the campus is firmly rooted in White City. They run programs for local children. They inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. The community is welcome here. People of all ages can learn be inspired and invent in White City. Imperial College London White City Campus continues to be at the heart of innovation and discovery. It’s a place where the past shapes the future.
