Was it the allure of undiscovered species that drove them, I wonder? Right here, before the Linnaeus-Obelisk, we’re reminded of the great naturalists it honors. This monument, erected around 1800, commemorates Carl von Linné, Albrecht Wilhelm Roth, Albrecht von Haller, and Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin. Imagine their passion for the natural world, a passion so profound that it inspired this lasting tribute. The Linnaeus-Obelisk, with its inscription plates, whispers their stories. It’s a testament to their dedication, their meticulous work in classifying and understanding the vast diversity of life on Earth. The original obelisk, crafted by Jacob Friedrich Schultz, endured the test of time. Sadly, World War II left its mark, claiming the four oval inscription plates that once adorned its base. But even war couldn’t erase the legacy of these men. In 1977, sculptor Kurt Lettow stepped in, replacing the lost plates and breathing new life into the monument. Today, the Linnaeus-Obelisk stands as a reminder: even in the face of chaos and destruction, the pursuit of knowledge and the appreciation of nature endure.
