Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here at the Espace culturel du christianisme à Lyon you stand on ground steeped in centuries of faith and persecution. This isn’t just a museum it’s a living testament to Lyon’s crucial role in the early spread of Christianity.

The Espace culturel du christianisme à Lyon opened in December 2014. It’s housed in the former Antiquaille Hospital. This remarkable space incorporates two historically significant features: a dungeon. Tradition holds that Saint Pothin was imprisoned here. There is also a crypt adorned with stunning 19th-century mosaics. They depict the martyrs of Lyon. Both the dungeon and the crypt are classified as Historic Monuments.

The project to create the Espace culturel du christianisme à Lyon began in 2003. This was after the Antiquaille Hospital closed. Emmanuel Payen a former rector of Fourvière spearheaded the effort. He was joined by Jacques Moulinier and Émile Visseaux. Their vision was to establish a space dedicated to celebrating the origins of Christianity in Gaul. They focused especially on the persecution of Christians in Lyon in 177 AD. The account of these events recorded in a letter from survivors and preserved by Eusebius of Caesarea speaks of Lyon being potentially the “first center of Christianity in Gaul.”

The Espace culturel du christianisme à Lyon’s location is significant. It complements the cultural landscape of Fourvière Hill. This hill showcases Lyon’s Gallo-Roman past. The site sits near the Lugdunum Museum. This museum highlights Lyon’s ancient history including its Gallo-Roman theaters. The Espace culturel du christianisme à Lyon is also geographically linked to other important religious sites. These include the Basilica of Fourvière and its Museum of Religious Art. It’s also near the Paleo-Christian Basilica of Saint-Just and the Church of Saint-Irénée.

The renovation of the building was extensive. Lyon architect Pierre Vurpas oversaw the work. He collaborated with Didier Repellin the chief architect of Historic Monuments. The restoration of the crypt’s mosaics was undertaken by specialists. The Atelier de Restauration des Mosaïques de Saint-Romain-en-Gal and the Atelier Patrizio de Marseille were involved. Their work ensured the preservation of this exceptional 19th-century religious art. The scenography which guides the visitor experience was conceived by architect Piotr Zaborski. It reflects the program devised by the ECCLY scientific committee led by Émile Visseaux.
