Founded in 1970 Shinji Shumeikai is a fascinating Japanese new religious movement. It branched from the Church of World Messianity. Its purpose is to promote health happiness and harmony for all. Shinji Shumeikai applies the insights of Mokichi Okada the founder of the Church of World Messianity. Okada is reverently known as Meishusama within Shumei. He taught that a world free of suffering could be achieved through spiritual healing reverence for nature and appreciation of art and beauty.
Meishusama’s life story is quite remarkable. Born in Tokyo in 1882 he endured poverty and illness. At 37 he sought spiritual meaning. He joined Oomoto a Shinto-related group. Miraculous events reportedly followed. In 1934 he established the Kannon Society of Japan. He believed the deity Kannon empowered and guided him.
Shinji Shumeikai’s philosophy centers on Jyorei a spiritual healing practice. It also emphasizes natural agriculture and the appreciation of art and beauty. The Miho Museum a stunning structure is a prime example. Commissioned by Mihoko Koyama a Shumei adherent it was designed by I M Pei. Pei also designed the bell tower at Misono the international headquarters of Shinji Shumeikai. The bell tower is visible from the Miho Museum’s windows. Another notable building Founders Hall was designed by Minoru Yamasaki.
