“A cultural jewel awaits discovery” the brochure promised. That’s how I found myself standing before the Remise in Kassel.

The Remise a former coach house is part of the Palais Bellevue. This building originally an observatory dates back to 1714. It underwent its first major transformation in 1790. Paul du Ry designed the initial structure. His grandson Simon Louis du Ry was responsible for the 1790 renovations. The building later housed the Brothers Grimm Museum.

The Remise itself a two-story side wing is the last remaining part of a courtyard complex. It was rebuilt after World War II. Today it’s a versatile event space. About 100 seats are available. The original small rooms have been opened up. All interior walls and the floor above the ground floor were removed. A red linoleum-covered structure houses stairs a connecting bridge to the main building and barrier-free bathrooms. A large facade element serves as the entrance. It combines a foyer a reception desk and a drinks counter.

The event space features a flexible stage area. A transformer station essential for the trams is integrated into the surrounding wall. This is cleverly combined with a backstage area. Steel frames stabilize the exterior walls. The inner surfaces feature a fine-grained slurry. This unifies the various surface textures. The original gateway has been restored providing access to the garden.

The Remise was renovated in close cooperation with the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments. The restoration included reinstating the historic gateway. This venue now hosts lectures concerts workshops and exhibitions. It’s a vital part of Kassel’s cultural scene. It’s a space alive with literature and music for all ages. The Remise it’s more than a building it’s a testament to history and a vibrant hub for culture.
