Saint Matthews Baptist Church

Did you know that Saint Matthews Baptist Church in Dallas traces its origins back to a simple act of generosity? In 1868, a group of Black community members yearned for a church of their own. Rowen Rogers, a member of New Hope Baptist Church, heard their plea. He donated an acre of land to fulfill their dream. By 1871, a log church stood proudly, christened “Saint Matthews Baptist Church.” It also earned the endearing nickname, “Little White Church.” Its first pastor, Reverend George Perry, guided the congregation until 1882. The church thrived, eventually outgrowing its humble log structure. In 1957, renovations began, holding services in the basement while the upper portion was rebuilt. Growth continued under Reverend Ronald E. Avery’s leadership from 1981 onwards. The sanctuary expanded in 1984, adding classrooms and a remodeled Fellowship Hall. As the new millennium approached, Saint Matthews Baptist Church looked to the future. A vision emerged to construct a new worship space. Through faith and perseverance, this vision became reality. On November 3, 2002, a brand new facility opened its doors. The church’s original site, now known as the St. Matthew Rosenwald School, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The new building boasts a 1200-seat sanctuary, a media center, a conference area, offices, and classrooms. Today, Saint Matthews Baptist Church continues to flourish. It offers numerous ministries, transportation for its members, a computer lab, and outreach programs like Meals of Love and Ruth’s Closet. Even a pandemic couldn’t stop their spirit. In 2020, they embraced technology and began online services. Saint Matthews Baptist Church in Dallas stands as a testament to the power of community, faith, and a vision realized.
