“Born 1612. Beheaded 1662.” The stark inscription on this plaque tells a dramatic story. This is the Sir Harry Vane Plaque. It commemorates a life intertwined with politics, revolution, and ultimately, execution.

Sir Harry Vane was a statesman. He lived in Vane House here on Rosslyn Hill. The Royal Society of Arts erected this plaque in 1897.

Vane’s story is one of ambition and conviction. He served as Governor of Massachusetts Bay in America. He later returned to England. He became treasurer of the Royal Navy.

The English Civil War saw Vane siding with Oliver Cromwell. He supported the Parliamentarians against the monarchy. This decision would later seal his fate.

After King Charles II regained power in 1660, Vane faced accusations of treason. His support for Cromwell made him a target. In 1662, Sir Harry Vane was beheaded.

Vane House is no more. It was demolished. Only the gate pier remains. The Sir Harry Vane Plaque is still here though. It is a silent witness to a turbulent past. It serves as a reminder of a life lived in the crossfire of history. It recalls a man who dared to challenge the crown.
