In 1908, a vision began to take shape on a hill south of Mar del Plata. This hill would soon be known as the Loma de Stella Maris. This vision was the Capilla Stella Maris. It began with a meeting at the Hotel Bristol. A group, led by Ana Elía de Ortiz Basualdo, wanted to create a place of worship and learning for the community. This included both summer residents and the local fishermen’s families who lived at the foot of the hill. The cornerstone of Capilla Stella Maris was laid on March 22, 1908. The chapel was blessed on March 7, 1912. The final temple, designed by Emilio Hurtré and built by Román Besozzi, was completed in 1918. Ever since, the Congregation of Adoring Sisters has guided Capilla Stella Maris. Originally, the commission envisioned a name inspired by a hymn, “Luz Divina de la Virgen Stella Maris.” However, writer Alberto del Solar, known for “The Legend of the Monk’s Tower,” suggested flipping the name. Thus, it became Capilla Stella Maris. Inside the Capilla Stella Maris, look for the stunning mural in the apse. This mural, added during renovations in 1940, depicts the Virgin Mary over the sea. Notice also the precious pieces of sacred art donated by early benefactors. A beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary, sculpted by H. Weigel, a student of Rodin, is another treasure. In 1937, President Agustín P. Justo declared the Virgin Stella Maris the protector of the Argentine Navy. Her feast day is celebrated on the last Friday of November. You’ll often see sailors present at celebrations at Capilla Stella Maris. It’s a testament to their devotion to their patron saint. The Capilla Stella Maris also played a crucial role in educating the local children. The adjoining school, also built through the efforts of Ana Elía de Ortiz Basualdo, provided education and vocational training for the children of the fishermen. The school initially started with 25 girls. Over time, it grew to accommodate up to 400 students. The school, originally for girls only, became co-educational in 1992. Today it boasts over 1000 students across various levels.
