From Dakota whispers to global acclaim, Minnehaha Regional Park tells a captivating story. The name itself, gifted by the Dakota people, means “curling water” or “waterfall,” a testament to the stunning Minnehaha Falls at its heart. Minnehaha Regional Park became a public space in 1889, one of the nation’s first state parks. Today, we stand at this iconic location, a place that has captivated hearts for centuries. The Dakota people considered this a sanctuary, a place of peace where all were welcome.

Minnehaha Regional Park isn’t just about the falls. It’s a story of pioneers and poets, of industry and artistry. John H. Stevens, the first authorized resident on the west bank of the Mississippi, built his home here in 1849. That house, the “Birthplace of Minneapolis,” stands within the park today, moved here in 1896 by a procession of over 10,000 school children. While Longfellow never visited Minnehaha Falls, his poem, “The Song of Hiawatha,” etched the falls into global consciousness. Published in 1855, the poem immortalized Minnehaha as “laughing water,” forever linking the park to the tale of Hiawatha and his beloved. The park even houses a bronze statue of the two, crafted by Jacob Fjelde.

Minnehaha Regional Park also carries whispers of early industry. A grist mill once operated downstream from the falls, though the creek’s temperamental flow proved a challenge. The park’s history also holds tales of a bustling zoo, a popular attraction from 1892 to 1907. The park’s Victorian-era train depot, the Minnehaha Princess Station, stands as a reminder of bygone travel.

Minnehaha Falls, the park’s centerpiece, is a geological marvel. Linked to Saint Anthony Falls, the only waterfall on the Mississippi, Minnehaha Falls formed as the glacial River Warren carved its path. Over millennia, the falls have migrated upstream, leaving behind a record of Minnesota’s ancient past in the exposed rock layers. The vibrant cascade varies with the seasons, from a thunderous roar after heavy rains to a delicate trickle in dry times. In winter, the falls transform into a breathtaking frozen sculpture.

Minnehaha Regional Park offers a tapestry of experiences. From the serene Longfellow Gardens to the lively Wabun picnic area, from the scenic trails winding through the lower glen to the overlook offering stunning Mississippi River views, the park beckons exploration. The park is more than a place of beauty. It’s a living testament to Minnesota’s history, culture, and natural wonders, a place where the whispers of the past echo in the laughter of the falls.
