Masjid Al-Istiqamah. A beacon of faith in Serangoon. It’s more than just a mosque. It’s a testament to community spirit. Completed in 1999 this magnificent structure holds a special place in Singapore’s history.
The story of Masjid Al-Istiqamah began long before its construction. The land was purchased in 1992. Fundraising efforts started in 1995. Initially the goal seemed insurmountable. The required S$700,000 felt like a mountain. So few volunteers stepped forward. An advertisement in the Berita Harian newspaper was necessary. This act brought the community together.
Construction began in September 1997. The design. A beautiful blend of Nusantara Middle Eastern and Mauritian styles. It’s a modern marvel. James Yip and Partners the architects created a stunning space. The result is a three-storey building. It houses 3300 worshippers. Its adaptable design optimizes space. Multiple rooms serve various purposes.
The i’tikaf section occupies the front. The multi-purpose section is at the rear. Solid timber roofs the i’tikaf area. It can accommodate 480 330 and 270 worshippers on each of its three levels.
Officially declared a waqf in June 1999 Masjid Al-Istiqamah opened its doors to the public. The total cost. A remarkable S$7 million. The opening ceremony in June 2000 was attended by Mohamad Maidin Packer Mohd. He was the Member of Parliament for Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency.
Today Masjid Al-Istiqamah continues to serve its community. It’s undergoing renovations and upgrades to improve its facilities. The mosque’s legacy is not just in its architecture.
