Wolves howling is an unforgettable sound. Here at Wolf Park, that sound connects us to groundbreaking research. Wolf Park’s story began in 1972. Dr. Erich Klinghammer founded it as the North American Wildlife Park Foundation. His mission? To study wolf pack dynamics and social behavior.

At that time, studying wolves was very difficult. They were elusive and hard to observe in the wild for long periods. Dr. Klinghammer saw this gap in knowledge. He brought two wolves, Koko and Cassie, from Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo. These wolves became the foundation of his ethology research. Ethology is the study of animal behavior.

Wolf Park quickly became a leader in the field. It developed new ways to socialize captive wolves. The park documented their behaviors meticulously. One key contribution is the Wolf Ethogram. This catalog of wolf behaviors and vocalizations is still used worldwide. It is a foundational tool in wolf studies.

Since its beginning, Wolf Park has promoted understanding and respect. It encourages coexistence between humans and wildlife. The park achieves this through groundbreaking work and education.

Erich Klinghammer’s background is fascinating. He was born in Kassel, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1951. He earned citizenship through his service in the U.S. Army. Later, he studied at the University of Chicago. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. Initially, he studied bird imprinting. But he discovered he was allergic to birds. So, he shifted his focus to gray wolves. They became the center of his research.

In 1962, Dr. Klinghammer earned his Ph.D. He lectured on ethology and animal psychology. First, he taught at the University of Chicago. In 1968, he joined Purdue University. He taught in the Department of Psychological Sciences until 1995. He was a member of several professional organizations. These included the Animal Behavior Society.

His passion for wolves extended beyond academia. Under his leadership, Wolf Park became a hub. It became a hub for education and conservation advocacy.

As Wolf Park grew, its influence expanded. It impacted global wolf conservation and research. Many notable biologists started their careers at Wolf Park. These include Doug Smith of the Yellowstone Wolf Project. Also, Roger Palmer, founder of the UK Wolf Conservation Trust.

Dr. Klinghammer hoped to educate the American public. He wanted people to cherish wolves and wild spaces. He believed they are an invaluable treasure. His dedication inspires conservationists. It ensures his vision lives on through Wolf Park’s work.

Today, Wolf Park covers over 100 acres. This rewilded farmland is home to wolves and bison. Also, foxes and other native species live here. The park advances its mission through hands-on learning. It also promotes scientific inquiry.

Wolf Park remains committed to expanding its impact. It fosters connections between people and wildlife. It serves as a beacon for conservation innovation and education. Wolf Park inspires future generations. It encourages them to protect the natural world.

Remember Erich Klinghammer. He laid the foundation for the meaningful work done here today at Wolf Park.
