“A mystical tale whispers through the hallowed halls of Masjid Keramat Luar Batang,” I begin, our group gathered before the weathered façade. “A tale of a holy man who defied even death’s embrace.” Masjid Keramat Luar Batang stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, a beacon in the bustling heart of Jakarta. Built in 1739, this mosque holds within its walls the echoes of centuries past. Its very name, Luar Batang, meaning “outside the coffin,” speaks to the miraculous legend surrounding its origins. Our story begins with Habib Husein bin Abubakar Alaydrus, a revered ulama from Hadramaut, Yemen. Arriving in Batavia in 1736, he embarked on a mission to spread Islam, his teachings resonating with the local community. Habib Husein’s influence grew, drawing followers from all walks of life. He even challenged the Dutch presence, a bold stance that landed him in prison. But even behind bars, stories circulated of his miraculous abilities, of appearing to lead prayers while seemingly asleep in his cell. Released due to these inexplicable events, Habib Husein, with the community’s support, established a small prayer house in 1739. This humble structure, initially named Langgar Annur, would eventually blossom into the grand Masjid Keramat Luar Batang we see today, thanks to a generous land grant from Governor-General Gustaaf Willem Baron van Imhoff. The mosque’s name, however, is inextricably linked to a more mystical event. Upon Habib Husein’s death in 1756, his followers prepared to lay him to rest in Tanah Abang. Yet, upon reaching the burial site, his body was inexplicably missing from the coffin. This mysterious disappearance occurred not once, but three times. Accepting this as a divine sign, the community decided to bury him near his beloved mosque. This event solidified the mosque’s name as Masjid Keramat Luar Batang, forever honoring the holy man who seemingly transcended earthly boundaries. Today, Masjid Keramat Luar Batang remains a vibrant center of worship and pilgrimage. Within its walls, you can still feel the presence of Habib Husein, his legacy woven into the very fabric of the building. The old gate, a relic of the original structure, stands as a silent sentinel. The intricate carvings on the entrance to the prayer hall whisper tales of devotion. And within the mosque itself, the tombs of Habib Husein and his loyal assistant, Habib Abdul Kadir, serve as a focal point for prayer and reflection. As you leave Masjid Keramat Luar Batang, carry with you not just the historical facts but also the mystical echoes that permeate this sacred space. Remember the tale of the holy man who defied death, his spirit forever intertwined with the heart of Jakarta.
