Brabrand is located six kilometers west of Aarhus city center. It sits just north of Brabrand Lake. In 2023, Brabrand had a population of 28,753 people. This transformation from village to suburb is a tale worth exploring.
Originally, Brabrand was a small village with farming as its base. In 1682, the village had just 13 farms and 3 houses with land. The farming system was based on a three-field system.
The arrival of the railway in 1862 marked a turning point for Brabrand. The train connection spurred growth. By 1870, the population had grown to 427. Just ten years later, it was 514. The railway turned Brabrand into a bustling station town.
Around the turn of the century, Brabrand had a church, a school and a savings bank. There was also a plant nursery. A place was set aside for the poor. You could find bakeries and guesthouses. The railway, telegraph and telephone stations made Brabrand a modern hub.
The 20th century saw rapid growth in Brabrand. In 1901, the population was 752. By 1965, it had exploded to 7,788. The railway, local businesses and proximity to Aarhus fueled this expansion. Brabrand became a suburb of Aarhus. More people commuted to the city for work.
The Gellerup Plan gave Brabrand an additional boost. This ambitious project planned 6,000 apartments. It also included community facilities. City Vest Center and Gellerupbadet were part of this plan.
Brabrand retains its own distinct character. The northern part of Brabrand features a large natural area. Low-rise buildings surround the former Holmstrup Gård manor. To the west, the Skjoldhøjkilen nature area continues.
South of Brabrand is the old village center. Brabrand Lake, the largest lake in Aarhus Municipality, is located here. The lake is a center for sports sailing. In 2007, the Danish Championships in canoe and kayak were held here.
Brabrand offers many activities. FDF Brabrand and Brabrand IF are active in the area. DDS Valhalla group also provides activities.
Public transport is readily available in Brabrand. Frequent buses connect Brabrand to Aarhus city center. There are also regional bus routes to Silkeborg and Galten.
Brabrand once had its own train station. It closed to passenger traffic in 1979. The station still handles freight transport. There are plans to reopen the station for regional trains. A light rail line may also serve the station in the future.
Several notable people have called Brabrand home. The director and former politician René Skau Björnsson lives in Brabrand. The poet Peter Laugesen lives here. Singer Lis Sørensen was born in Brabrand. Football player Flemming Povlsen was also born in Brabrand. Politicians Peter Skaarup, Morten Ramsland and Christian Haun were all born or live in Brabrand.
