Hidden in plain sight, the Rathaus Mickten whispers tales of a bygone era. The Rathaus Mickten stands before you, not as a grand administrative center, but as a quiet apartment building. This unassuming structure once held the heart of Mickten’s independent governance. Originally built in 1874 as a school, the Rathaus Mickten took on its civic role in 1898. The community of Mickten, first mentioned in 1378, had grown. They needed a proper space for their burgeoning administration. The old schoolhouse, conveniently located at Böcklinstraße 17 (now Scharfenberger Straße 2), was repurposed. The transformation preserved some original school features. The central projection, the clock nestled in the gable’s triangular peak, and the bell tower perched atop the roof all remained. These elements provided a link to the building’s past. The facade received upgrades, giving it a dignified appearance suitable for a town hall. Inside, a dedicated room was created for the town council’s deliberations. For four short years, the Rathaus Mickten served as the center of local government. Then, in 1903, Mickten was incorporated into Dresden. The Rathaus Mickten’s brief stint as a civic hub ended. The building was converted into a residential dwelling, a purpose it continues to serve today. Though it has lost some decorative details over the years, the Rathaus Mickten retains a quiet dignity. The bell tower stands as a subtle reminder of its past life as a school and town hall. A silent testament to Mickten’s history, now largely forgotten.
