In 1905, the Obergorbitzer Kapelle was completed. This charming chapel stands within the Obergorbitzer Friedhof. The cemetery, also known as the Gorbitzer Friedhof, offers a peaceful escape. The Obergorbitzer Friedhof covers 9,800 square meters. It’s owned and managed by the Ev.-Luth. Philippus-Kirchgemeinde Dresden-Gorbitz. The church authority for both is the Ev.-Luth. Kirchspiel Dresden West. The Obergorbitzer Kapelle isn’t just a place of mourning. It’s also a place for remembrance and reflection. Inside the chapel, you’ll find a memorial. It commemorates the community members who fell during the final days of World War II. Outside the Obergorbitzer Kapelle, a small bell tower was added in 1987. Its gentle chimes enhance the serene atmosphere of the Obergorbitzer Friedhof. The cemetery is thoughtfully designed with two main paths. These paths, along with the existing trees and hedges, add to its park-like character. Thirteen burial vaults separate the older and newer sections of the Obergorbitzer Friedhof. The older section showcases many historic family burial sites. These sites offer glimpses into the lives of prominent Gorbitz residents. The Obergorbitzer Kapelle and Friedhof hold a special place in the community. Each year, on Eternity Sunday, a musical memorial service takes place in the Obergorbitzer Kapelle. It honors those laid to rest in the past year. On St. John’s Day, if weather permits, an open-air service is held on the grounds of the Obergorbitzer Friedhof. The chapel itself is bright and welcoming, accommodating up to 90 people. A digital organ and sound system enable diverse musical arrangements for funeral services.
