On Western Avenue, just north of the Voss Parish Center, stands the Queen of Angels Guild Hall. This isn’t just a building. It’s a phoenix, risen from ashes. The Queen of Angels Parish itself was founded in 1909, a beacon of welcome for people of all cultures. The parish aimed to be a diverse community, not tied to a single ethnic group. Initially, a single building housed the church, school, and convent at Western and Sunnyside. But the parish grew quickly.

The need for a larger church led to the purchase of property at Sunnyside and Claremont in 1924. Constructing the new church proved a challenge. Soft soil and an underground spring meant it took 14 years to complete. Finally, in 1940, the new church was dedicated. The parish continued to expand, adapting to the community’s evolving needs. The original building transformed into Queen of Angels School, with a separate rectory and convent added later. Closed car dealerships on Western Avenue found new life as the Queen of Angels Guild Hall. This community center became a hub for job training, athletics, and even barn dances.

Tragedy struck in 1973 when the Guild Hall burned down. But from the ashes, a new Guild Hall emerged, rebuilt in two phases over the next decade. This rebuilt structure now houses the Guild Hall Gym and the Voss Social Hall. The Queen of Angels Guild Hall represents not only a space for community activities but also the parish’s resilience and commitment to serving its people. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Queen of Angels Parish, a place where community thrives and history lives on.
