Perhaps it’s no surprise that Latymer Upper School stands here today a testament to centuries of education and transformation. Founded in 1624, Latymer Upper School has a rich history. It began with a bequest from Edward Latymer. He was a wealthy lawyer who wanted to help the poor boys of Hammersmith.

Originally, Latymer’s gift provided clothing and education for eight poor boys. Imagine them receiving their doublets, breeches and shirts. This happened twice a year on Ascension Day and All Saints’ Day. The Latymer cross was proudly worn on their sleeves.

The Latymer Foundation managed these funds. They ensured local boys received an education for centuries. In 1895, the Latymer Upper School was officially established. It opened its doors on King Street with 106 pupils.

Latymer has always valued inclusivity and diversity. Financial support was provided to many children. By 1919, 25% of students received bursaries. These were supported by the local education authority or the Latymer Foundation.

After the Butler Education Act in 1944, Latymer became a Direct Grant school. Half the places were reserved for scholarship pupils. The Latymer Foundation also supported fee-paying families. This meant nearly 80% of students attended Latymer for free in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Government support decreased in the 1970s. The Direct Grant scheme was abolished in 1976. Latymer had to make difficult decisions to stay solvent. Fees were introduced at a realistic level. This made it harder for boys from poorer backgrounds to attend. By 1998, only two free places were funded by the Foundation.

The trustees of the Latymer Foundation sought to restore Edward Latymer’s original vision. In 2004, the Development Office now the Foundation Office was established. It sought donations to support Latymer’s bursary program.

Thanks to generous donations, the bursary program expanded significantly. Today, Latymer offers bursaries to one in four Upper School students. This is a key milestone in creating a socially inclusive community.

Latymer Upper School moved to its present site in 1895. The school stretches from the gothic gates on King Street to the Boat House on the River Thames.
