“Another demolition plan bites the dust.” That’s the phrase that comes to mind as we stand here at Bemerton Estate. Bemerton Estate is a social housing complex. It sits north of Bingfield Street and west of Caledonian Road. This is within the London Borough of Islington.

Built in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the estate got its name from Bemerton Street. Specifically, it replaced the northern part of that street. But Bemerton Estate’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the people who call it home.

Bemerton Street itself has a history. Back in 1852, it was one of several streets with terraced houses near Caledonian Road. Originally, it stretched further north. However, post-World War II redevelopment changed that. The northern part of Bemerton Street vanished to make way for something new.

The history of Bemerton Street is a story of contrasts. Charles Booth, a social researcher, classed it as “Very poor, casual. Chronic want.” But from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, the Bemerton Estate replaced part of it. New housing sprung up east and west of the remaining part of Bemerton Street.

Bemerton Estate has faced its share of challenges. Crime and anti-social behavior have cast a shadow over the area. At one point, there were plans to tear it down. However, those plans were scrapped in 2011 because they were deemed uneconomical.

In 2015, a tenant’s management organization on the estate was wound up. This happened after its chairman was jailed for sex offences. The estate has become known for the gap between the rich and poor in Islington. This highlights the broader social issues at play here.

Bemerton Estate isn’t just a place; it’s a symbol. It represents the ongoing struggles and resilience of a community. The story of Bemerton Estate and Bemerton Street reflects the complex layers of London’s social fabric. From its construction to its challenges, it remains a testament to urban life.
