Beneath our feet lies a story of survival. It’s a story of stench and disease and ultimately triumph of engineering at the Old Sweage Disposal Works. Let me transport you back to a time when London was drowning in its filth.
Before the Old Sweage Disposal Works was built, London was a very different place. Imagine streets overflowing with waste. Cesspools were common. People emptied them directly onto the streets. Rain would then wash everything into the Thames River.
The Metropolitan Sewers Act of 1848 made it even worse. It allowed sewage to be dumped directly into the Thames. Wealthy families were the worst offenders. The problem was that people still used the Thames for washing and drinking.
The result was disastrous. Diseases like cholera were rampant. It’s said that half of London’s infants didn’t live to see their fifth birthday. People thought diseases were caused by bad air or miasmas. Romans knew better and built sewers to direct waste away from the city.
Dr. John Snow was a pioneer. During cholera outbreaks, he tracked the source to a water pump on Broad Street. He discovered that sewage was leaking into the well.
But real change didn’t happen until the Great Stink of 1858. That summer, London baked in extreme heat. The Thames River became a toxic soup. Waste from homes, businesses, hospitals, and factories all flowed into it.
The smell was so bad that it disrupted Parliament. Some people even fainted or vomited from the stench. The House of Parliament had to soak new blinds in chloride of lime. People threw lime into the Thames to try and deodorize it. But it was not enough.
Parliament passed a bill to fund a new sewer system. Joseph Bazalgette was hired as chief engineer. He planned an extensive underground system. This system would funnel waste downstream out of London. It would then be dumped into the Thames Estuary at high tide.
The Old Sweage Disposal Works plan involved building 1,100 miles of drains. These drains fed into 82 miles of new brick-lined sewers. The system carried effluent to six intercepting sewers. Many old streams became hidden flows of waste.
The scale of the project was huge. It required 318 million bricks and thousands of workers. Bazalgette used New Portland cement. It was strong and water-resistant. That’s why the tunnels still stand today.
Two intercepting sewers ran along the Thames’s banks. They caught waste flowing downhill. This allowed for the construction of new embankments. The Victoria, Chelsea, and Albert Embankments were all designed by Bazalgette.
The system was officially opened in 1865. But it wasn’t fully completed until 1875. It could carry 2 billion liters of waste every day. This was enough to handle London’s growing population. The new sewage network eliminated cholera.
When Bazalgette died in 1891, London’s population had more than doubled. His forward-thinking design ensured the tunnels were large enough to cope. The brick-lined tunnels are still the basis of London’s sewer system today at the Old Sweage Disposal Works.
