A century ago, a sturdy brick church stood proudly on Burley Avenue. This was the Hegewisch United Methodist Church. It replaced a simpler frame church nearby. The Hegewisch United Methodist Church officially opened its doors on December 9, 1906. It quickly became a cornerstone of the Hegewisch community. Hegewisch itself was a relatively young town, founded just 23 years earlier by Adolph Hegewisch. By 1906, Hegewisch was officially part of Chicago. The area was experiencing growth. New schools, businesses, and transportation lines were being established. The Hegewisch United Methodist Church served as a spiritual anchor during this period of rapid change. Sadly, after nearly a century of service, the Hegewisch United Methodist Church closed its doors on January 4, 1998. While the building may no longer host services, its legacy as a vital part of Hegewisch’s history remains. It stands as a reminder of a time when a small but determined community sought to build both a town and a place of worship.
