The construction of Purewa Tunnel began in March 1925. Workers experienced in building the notoriously difficult North Auckland Line tunnels tackled this project. Imagine the scene. Horse-drawn carts rumbled alongside men using gelignite to blast through rock. Triple shifts were the norm. These workers mostly British with some Italians and Dalmatians toiled tirelessly.
But the Purewa Tunnel held surprises. Electric lights illuminated the interior. Yet glowworms thrived. Miners described a weird and fantastical sight. These glowworms unlike any seen in other tunnels likely came from nearby bush.
Adding to the mystery sparrows flocked to the tunnel. They lived off pilfered horse feed. These birds became remarkably accustomed to the constant explosions. The tunnel wasn’t just a place of work. It was a strange and vibrant ecosystem.
The breakthrough came in April 1926. The tunnel’s completion in March 1928 marked a significant milestone. The Westfield Deviation including Purewa Tunnel opened for goods traffic on September 1 1929. However passenger services didn’t begin until May 11 1930.
Purewa Tunnel hasn’t been without challenges. Water drainage problems caused significant issues requiring repairs and speed restrictions. In 2010 and 2011 the tracks were lowered. This was necessary to accommodate Auckland’s railway electrification project.
Today Purewa Tunnel continues to serve as a vital part of Auckland’s transport network. Passenger and freight trains including the Northern Explorer traverse its length. It stands as a silent witness to Auckland’s railway development. A reminder of the sweat grit and even the glowworms and sparrows that helped shape its history.
