Standing before you is the Islington Central Methodist Church. It is a haven of faith, a vibrant community space, and a testament to the enduring spirit of Methodism in London. This church, as you see it today, is the culmination of a long and interesting journey, a journey that began in a humble butcher’s shop.

A journey that started in the 19th century when Wesleyan Methodists first found a home in Islington. The church was initially located on Liverpool Road, a location bustling with life and activity. This building soon after became the site of the Royal Agricultural Hall where crowds gathered for agricultural exhibitions, a far cry from the quiet sermons of the church.

But like the seeds sprouting in the fertile soil, Methodism in Islington persevered. The congregation was moved to Highbury Chapel, another place of worship that had been built with beautiful Gothic features. But with the rapid growth of the city, the community felt a need for a new space, a place where everyone could unite.

The answer came in 1929 with the grand opening of Islington Central Hall, a beautiful church with a two-tiered auditorium that could accommodate 1,300 people. This new space was a beacon of hope, a testament to the Methodists’ continued commitment to the community.

Their work was made even stronger with the arrival of Reverend Donald Soper, who led from 1929 till 1936. He was a man of great passion and dedication, who drew large audiences and initiated projects to help the poor and unemployed. His leadership marked a period of growth and revitalization for the church.

Despite the generosity of the community, maintaining a large building like the Central Hall proved to be a challenge. The church eventually closed its doors in 1953 and the building was repurposed. Methodism’s spirit, though, was undeterred.

In 1962, the church found a new home in Palmer Place, marking another chapter in its remarkable saga. Here, on the current site, the church thrives, offering a warm welcome to anyone seeking spiritual nourishment and fellowship. From the humble butcher’s shop to the grand Central Hall and now its present location, Islington Central Methodist Church represents the enduring legacy of Methodism in this vibrant city.
