Interestingly, the Estadio Olímpico Universitario isn’t just a stadium. It is a designated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 2007.
Welcome to the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. It stands as a testament to Mexico’s rich sporting and cultural history. Built in 1952 the stadium quickly became a landmark. It is located inside Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City.
Imagine the roar of the crowd. Feel the excitement of the games. The Estadio Olímpico Universitario has hosted countless events. It has seen triumphs and shared defeats.
The stadium’s story began in the early 1950s. Architects Augusto Pérez Palacios, Jorge Bravo, and Raúl Salinas Moro designed it. Their vision was a futuristic sports venue. It had modern technological advances. Over 10000 workers helped construct the stadium in just eight months. The stadium’s original name was Estadio Universitario.
The Estadio Olímpico Universitario was the largest stadium in Mexico at the time. It held about 70000 people. The first major event was the 1955 Pan American Games.
In 1968 the Summer Olympics were held here. The seating capacity increased to over 83000. This met the IOC requirements. The stadium hosted track and field events. It also hosted equestrian competitions and football matches. The opening and closing ceremonies took place here. Tommie Smith and John Carlos made their famous Black Power salute here. It happened during the medal ceremony for the 200 meters.
The Estadio Olímpico Universitario hosted four games during the 1986 FIFA World Cup. However, the final match was at the Estadio Azteca.
Look to the east side of the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Notice the mural by Diego Rivera. It is called “The University, the Mexican family, peace and youth sports.” Rivera planned to cover the entire stadium in similar designs. Sadly, he died before he could finish it.
The structure resembles a volcano. It sits on a rough volcanic base. Sloping land surrounds it covered in magma stones.
Today the Estadio Olímpico Universitario is home to the Universidad Nacional. It is also home to the American football team Pumas CU. It remains an iconic venue. It continues to host sporting events and cultural activities.
