His name echoes on this street, though many who pass don’t know his story. Rue René Alazard. It’s a simple street, tucked away in Bagnolet, a suburb of Paris. But René Alazard’s life, though short, was anything but simple. He was born in 1926, a child of Bagnolet. His parents ran a coal business on Avenue de la Dhuys. Life wasn’t easy, but it was home. Then the world changed. The year was 1940. War cast a long shadow, and René, just fourteen, had to leave school to help his family. He became a charbonnier, a charcoal burner, in the nearby woods of Champigny-sur-Marne. Imagine him there, working hard, the scent of wood smoke clinging to his clothes. But René’s story is not just about hardship. It’s about courage. In 1944, a fire ignited within him, a fire for freedom. He joined the French Resistance, the FFI, in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. He was just seventeen, barely a man, yet he took up arms to fight for his city, for his country. His bravery culminated on August 24th, 1944, during the Liberation of Paris. On that day, René Alazard fell under a hail of gunfire at the Pont de l’Alma, his life given for the cause of liberty. His sacrifice was not in vain. Paris was freed, and Rue René Alazard stands as a testament, a silent echo of a young man’s bravery. So as you walk this street, remember René Alazard. Remember his courage, his sacrifice, and his love for his city and country. His story, like his street, is a poignant reminder that even in the quietest corners, heroes rise.
