“What could be so special about this street?” Rue Sully might seem like any other street in Lyon. But it holds layers of history and culinary secrets. Rue Sully stretches through Lyon’s 6th arrondissement. It runs from Quai de Serbie to Rue Anatole France.
Let’s start with its namesake. Maximilien de Béthune, born in 1559, became the Duke of Sully in 1606. He served King Henri IV. Sully became known for restoring France’s finances. His famous quote: “Labourage et pâturage sont les mamelles qui nourrissent la France”. It translates to “Plowing and pasture are the breasts that feed France.” The street was gradually constructed during the 19th century.
Now, for a tasty tidbit. Keep an eye out for number 20 Rue Sully. Here you will find Le Bouchon Sully. Le Bouchon Sully is a traditional Lyonnais restaurant. Julien Gautier and Emmanuel Tachon-Foley opened it in 2014. But before that, it was chef Mathieu Viannay’s first Lyon establishment in 1998. Today, Le Bouchon Sully offers Lyon specialties and seasonal dishes. The decor resembles a traditional bouchon. It provides a warm and intimate atmosphere.
The architecture of Rue Sully also tells a story. The first section features solid stone buildings from the 19th century. Look at numbers 16 and 17. They face each other with beautiful decorations. At number 12, notice the grand portal. It’s from the Gadagne chapel built around 1530. It was rescued in 1816 when the church was destroyed. After Rue Vendôme, the architecture becomes more diverse. Buildings from various eras stand side by side.
Don’t miss the statue at the corner of Quai de Serbie. Erected in 1844, it honors the great man himself. Also, note the charming entrances at numbers 107 and 130. After Rue Masséna, you will see the side of Église Saint Joseph. After Boulevard des Belges, the north side reveals a long facade with black ironwork.
