Luiz da Rocha Lima, inspired by his spiritual mentor, the German Frei Luiz, founded the Lar de Frei Luiz. Today, we stand before this sprawling complex on Estrada da Boiçana in Taquara. Lar de Frei Luiz is much more than a center for spiritualist gatherings. It’s a beacon of hope and help for those in need. Founded in 1947 in Abolição, it moved to its current location in 1964. The Lar de Frei Luiz has been a haven for children, the elderly, those struggling with addiction, and anyone in need of assistance, both physical and spiritual, ever since. Funding primarily comes from donations, supplemented by partnerships, events like bazaars, and the sale of spiritualist books in their bookstore. Inside, you might encounter the “quadro de vidências,” a board where Eduardo Fructuoso, the resident clairvoyant, posts messages believed to come from the spiritual realm. The Lar de Frei Luiz extends its compassionate reach to those who can’t afford medicine. Thousands gather here weekly on Wednesdays and bi-weekly on Sundays for spiritual treatments, engaging lectures, and a sense of community. The Lar de Frei Luiz truly embodies the spirit of Frei Luiz, a German friar who dedicated his life to helping the poor in Petrópolis. This extensive 92,000 square meter site, acquired by Rocha Lima in 1969, houses not only the main building but also the Santuário Luiz da Rocha Lima, inaugurated in 1983 with a 300-seat auditorium, and the Santuário Frei Luiz. Roni Lima’s book, “Médicos do Espaço – Luiz da Rocha Lima e o Lar de Frei Luiz,” offers a deeper look into this remarkable institution. The Lar de Frei Luiz continues to be a testament to the enduring power of compassion and community.
