Craving a taste of South Asia right here in Seattle? That’s what Rupee Bar offers. It is a jewel box of Indian and Sri Lankan flavors. This isn’t just another bar. Rupee Bar is a sensory journey. Owners Joe Sundberg, Rachel Johnson, and Patrick Thalasinos poured their hearts into this place. They even built it themselves after their travels.

Rupee Bar’s design transports you far from Seattle’s gray skies. Heliotrope Architects collaborated with the owners. Together, they transformed a small space into an exotic escape. The bar only takes up 700 square feet. It is an intimate setting that seats just 26 people.

Notice the vibrant peacock green that envelops the room. This color choice is deliberate. It mentally whisks you away. The design incorporates natural materials for warmth. Look at the Oregon walnut. It monolithically tops the bar. The walnut wraps the bar casework. This adds a subtle nod to the Pacific Northwest.

Polished brass trims gleam. Leather adorns the stool seating. Indian clay tiles and slatted pendant lights add visual interest. These elements create a holistic experience. The design enhances the aromatic dishes and spiced cocktails.

Rupee Bar opened in fall 2020. It quickly gained recognition. GQ magazine named it one of the “Best New Restaurants in America 2020.” The James Beard Foundation also nominated it for Outstanding Restaurant Design.

The owners have a great design sense. Their vision shines through every detail at Rupee Bar. The space is located in an old brick storefront in Ballard. The cozy interior is finished in warm blue hues.

Consider joining the Rupee Bar Chef’s Supper Club. You can experience the best of this award-winning restaurant at home. Each month features a rotating multi-course meal for two or four people. Expect signature dishes and seasonal specials. There are always surprise off-menu creations.

Rupee Bar is more than a place to eat and drink. It is a carefully crafted experience. The owners’ passion and vision are evident in every detail. From the colors to the materials, everything serves a purpose. So, step inside and let Rupee Bar transport you to South Asia.
