A restrained modern Gothic building. That’s how the Redeemer Lutheran Church was described in 1930. But today standing before it you see so much more. Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elmhurst a western suburb of Chicago has a story woven into its very stones.
Founded in 1928 from a small group of English-speaking Lutherans the church initially met in a school auditorium. They’d split from Immanuel Lutheran Church because Immanuel only offered services in German. These early worshippers dreamed of a space of their own a place to build community and faith.
Their dream took shape in 1929. The congregation purchased land and hired the architectural firm Hotchkiss & Edgar. They were the same architects who designed Immanuel Lutheran Church. This fact itself speaks to the enduring legacy of craftsmanship within the Lutheran community. The groundbreaking ceremony on October 20 1929 marked the beginning of a remarkable chapter.
The church building was completed on May 18 1930. It was described then as one of the most attractive and imposing houses of worship in Elmhurst. The dedication was a three-service extravaganza with prominent preachers and choirs from neighboring congregations. A testament to the enthusiasm and the strong sense of community surrounding the new church.
The Redeemer Lutheran Church wasn’t without its challenges. The original Mueller pipe organ was repossessed during the Great Depression. But the spirit of the congregation persevered. A new Reuter organ was installed in 1953. Fifty years later it received a major renovation thanks to the generous contributions of parishioners each sponsoring a pipe in the new ranks.
Growth led to expansion. In 1955 an annex was added for Christian education activities. Then in 1972 Titus Place a new facility across the street opened. It included classrooms a gymnasium and office space. The church’s growth wasn’t simply about buildings. It was about nurturing faith and fostering relationships.
The church’s interior is an artistic treasure trove. Medieval-style stained glass illuminates the sanctuary. Carved wooden doors add a touch of history. A contemporary piece representing the Holy Spirit hangs in the northern transept.
