Did you know that St. Peter’s Catholic Church here in Seattle began with a humble purchase? Back in 1929 the property for St. Peter church and its rectory was acquired for $4,700.00. It was bought from the Quong Tuck Lung Co.
The history of St. Peter’s Catholic Church is deeply intertwined with the Italian American community. Specifically, those residing in Beacon Hill and the Rainier Valley. The church served as a focal point. It reflected the growing diversity of South Seattle. Imagine the families gathering here. They were united by faith and heritage.
Bishop O’Dea officially announced the creation of St. Peter Parish on February 3 1931. This announcement was sent to the surrounding parishes. Mr. Frank McMahon was chosen as the architect. Ground was broken for the church on June 2 1931. The actual construction commenced the week of June 28 1931. Msgr. Gustave Archtergael pastor of St. Alphonsus Church in north Seattle laid the cornerstone on October 15 1931.
Reverend John Murphy served as Senior Pastor. He led the congregation from 1931. That was when the building was first occupied until 1969. His long tenure helped solidify the church’s role in the community.
St. Peter’s Catholic Church is located near an area once known as Garlic Gulch. This nickname reflected the strong Italian American presence in the northern end of Rainier Valley. Early Italian migrants had come to the Northwest. They worked in coal mines in Renton, Newcastle, and Black Diamond. Later they established farms and businesses. Fred Marino and Joe Desimone were instrumental in organizing Pike Place Market.
The growth of Seattle’s Italian American population led to the development of Garlic Gulch. This community centered around Rainier Avenue. St. Peter’s Catholic Church along with other institutions like Colman School and Mount Virgin Roman Catholic Church became vital landmarks. They were located south on Rainier Avenue. They were also in the nearby Beacon Hill and Mount Baker neighborhoods.
The patron saint of our parish is Peter the Apostle. Peter was originally named Simon. He was a fisherman from Bethsaida near Lake Tiberias. His brother Andrew introduced him to Jesus. Jesus renamed him Cephas. This is the Aramaic equivalent of Peter meaning The Rock in Greek. Peter was the chosen leader of the apostles. He is frequently mentioned in the Gospels. He became the first pope of the Catholic Church. He was crucified at the foot of Vatican Hill in Rome. The church celebrates his feast day on June 29th.
Today St. Peter’s Catholic Church continues to serve its diverse community. It welcomes all to live out the message of Christ. This is done through love and service. The church supports various initiatives. These includes the St. Vincent de Paul Conference. This provides food and financial aid to those in need.
