Established in 1870 Avondale Primary School initially operated within the Whau Community Hall. A humble two-classroom school building was constructed on the site in 1882 marking a significant step for the Avondale Primary School. The school’s name officially changed from Whau District School to Avondale Primary School in 1883. By 1886 the school’s popularity had grown significantly its roll reaching 175 students. This rapid growth necessitated the construction of two additional classrooms. The school’s early years were marked by a shortage of space and teachers and by the early 1900s class sizes were astonishingly large some reaching eighty-five pupils. One teacher Mrs Newman taught until the remarkable age of ninety-seven her class alone consisting of over sixty children. This demonstrates the dedication of the school’s staff in its early years. The school continued to grow. An old register from 1919 reveals that Avondale Primary School had nearly 600 children in just eight classes. Contrast this with today’s Avondale Primary School with approximately 370 students spread across fourteen classes. A testament to the evolution of education. Avondale Primary School’s history isn’t just about numbers. It’s about the people who shaped it. John Bollard a prominent community leader and Member of Parliament played a crucial role. He helped fundraise and support the school for over fifty years. His contribution was so significant that a brass plaque celebrating his support adorned the school for nearly eighty years. This plaque is a poignant reminder of the community’s investment in Avondale Primary School. The school’s commitment to providing a rich learning experience is evident throughout its history from its humble beginnings to its modern facilities. The legacy of Avondale Primary School is one of growth perseverance and community spirit. A legacy that continues to this day.
