Hear the whistle blow. Feel the rumble. That’s the J550 Steam Locomotive. Right here.

The J550 isn’t just a locomotive. It’s a legend. The very last steam locomotive in revenue service for Victorian Railways. Its final run was on May 25 1972. It pulled the 6:00 am Bendigo pilot. The next day it went into storage.

Built in 1954 at Vulcan Foundry in the UK this magnificent machine is a 2-8-0. That means it has two leading wheels eight driving wheels and no trailing wheels. It’s part of a class of 60 locomotives numbered 500 to 559. The first thirty ran on coal. The last thirty including our J550 ran on oil. Notice the distinctive circular oil tank on its tender. That’s a key feature of the oil-burning Js.

The J550 didn’t just chug along quietly. It hauled goods and passengers all over Victoria. It worked hard. It saw the countryside. It witnessed the shift from steam to diesel. It lived through a pivotal time in railway history. Think of the stories it could tell. The journeys it undertook. The people it carried. The sounds it made.

After its retirement J550 was displayed at Mirboo North station. Then it moved to Warragul. It sat there for years proudly showing its paint job. It was even involved in a swap deal with another locomotive A2 986. It’s quite the story isn’t it?

Today J550 is undergoing restoration in Noojee. Soon this magnificent machine will be back in all its glory. Imagine the steam the hiss the power. A symbol of a bygone era. A reminder of an era of steam power. A testament to engineering prowess. The J550. A true Victorian Railways legend.
