Across the railway lines stands Power Road Bridge a vital artery of London’s transport network. This isn’t just any bridge. Power Road Bridge carries the busy A406 North Circular Road. This road is a crucial route for countless drivers daily.

For years the old Power Road Bridge served London well. Built in 1922 it carried traffic over the railway lines. But time and wear took their toll. The bridge had reached the end of its life. It was beyond repair. Replacing it was a massive undertaking. Imagine the logistical nightmare of keeping the A406 open during construction.

The project to replace Power Road Bridge was enormous. It cost approximately £35 million. The work involved not only building a new bridge but also maintaining traffic flow. Three lanes of the A406 remained open throughout most of the construction. This was a feat of engineering and project management.

The new Power Road Bridge is a marvel of modern engineering. Its design life is 120 years. It’s built to last. It boasts improved footpaths and lighting. There are also better facilities for cyclists. Safety was a priority. The project team aimed to make this section of the A406 safer for all users.

The construction was challenging. Deep piling was required to support the foundations. This was necessary given the location. The bridge foundations were installed below road level. This was tricky in the restricted space under the existing bridge. The team also had to work around live railway lines. Even the concrete had to be pumped 160 meters from the site compound. The concrete had to cross the existing Power Road Bridge using steel supply lines.

Despite the many challenges the project succeeded. The team achieved a remarkable safety record. They had zero accidents over four years. This is an exceptional accomplishment considering the complexities of the work. The project won numerous awards. These awards included a TfL Beacon Award. This award recognized outstanding health and safety performance. They also received Silver Considerate Constructors Scheme awards. The Power Road Bridge project stands as an example of excellence in construction.

The old bridge wasn’t completely removed immediately. A section remained. This section held 275kV water-cooled primary electric cables. These cables couldn’t be easily diverted. They were eventually decommissioned. The demolition of the remaining section depended on further funding. The old bridge section gave a glimpse into the decorative designs of early 20th-century bridge building.

Today Power Road Bridge stands strong. It’s a testament to meticulous planning innovation and teamwork. As you stand here looking at this impressive structure remember the ingenuity and dedication that brought it into being. The story of Power Road Bridge is more than just concrete and steel. It’s a story of human perseverance and triumph. A story of London’s ever-evolving infrastructure.
