Ever watched a play on a boat? That’s what Theaterkahn Dresden offers. This theater sits on a former cargo ship right here on the Terrassenufer near the Augustusbrücke.
The Theaterkahn Dresden has been the home of the Dresdner Brettl theater since 1994. Imagine, a theater that floats. It is unique. The Theaterkahn Dresden is not just a venue. It is an experience.
Originally, the ship was built in 1918 as a Plauer Maßkahn in what is now Děčín. It stretches almost 65 meters long and nearly 8 meters wide. For years, it served as a storage ship. It was even slated for scrap.
But Friedrich-Wilhelm Junge, the founder of the Dresdner Brettl, saw its potential. He acquired the ship for next to nothing. Then, he transformed it into a theater in Tangermünde. The ship was even renamed Marion in honor of Marion Ermer. She was a supporter.
Securing its location in Dresden’s historic center wasn’t easy. Multiple authorities had to approve. The state of Saxony provided the land. Finally, on October 3, 1994, the Theaterkahn Dresden opened.
Detlef Rothe succeeded Junge as director in 2005. Holger Böhme took over in 2017. In 2012, the Theaterkahn Dresden received a striking red-and-white paint job during maintenance. Every five years, it goes to the shipyard for inspection.
Inside, the theater accommodates 170 spectators. Before renovations, it held 216. Annually, around 300 performances take place here. The Theaterkahn Dresden stages about 25 productions each season. Many are original works.
Between 2020 and 2022, the Theaterkahn Dresden underwent renovations. These included a photovoltaic system, a redesigned foyer, and updated technology. The Elbe also plays a role here. Since 2006, a digital display on the Theaterkahn Dresden shows the Elbe’s water level.
Besides the theater, you will find the Kahnaletto restaurant. It seats 98 guests. There is also a bar with 50 seats. Both are independent from the theater. They lease their space from the Theaterkahn Foundation.
The Theaterkahn Dresden operates under a unique structure. The Theaterkahn GmbH originally purchased the ship. Later it became a foundation. This foundation owns the ship and leases it to the theater and restaurant.
Initially funded by significant city subsidies, the Theaterkahn Dresden now relies less on public money. It is a testament to its success. The Theaterkahn Dresden is more than just a theater. It’s a floating landmark. It combines culture, history, and a bit of nautical charm. Enjoy the show.
