Four kilos of bronze. That’s all it takes to immortalize a life. A life cut short a life full of defiance. This unassuming stele here in Dresden tells the story of Herta Lindner. Herta Lindner. A young woman a communist a resister. This simple memorial stands in silent tribute to her.

Herta Lindner was born in 1920 in Mariaschein Czechoslovakia. She was a daughter of a miner. She joined the socialist children’s organization the Falken at the age of nine. Imagine her a child already embracing ideals of equality and justice. By 1937 she had become the chairwoman of a youth group in Mariaschein. This was a group committed to bridging the gap between Germans and Czechs. A testament to her belief in unity despite national divisions.

Herta Lindner moved to Dresden in 1939. There she worked as a saleswoman. Then in 1941 she returned to Teplitz-Turn. There she worked in a grocery store. She simultaneously joined the banned Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. With her antifascist mountaineering club the Lindenbrüder Hohenstein she used hiking and climbing trips for her political work. She also encouraged her father Heinrich to participate in communist resistance.

This is where the mountains became more than mountains. They became a stage for resistance. A cloak for clandestine meetings. A sanctuary for planning against the Nazi regime.

On November 27 1941 she and her father were arrested. The Volksgerichtshof sentenced her to death on November 23 1942. The charge was preparation for high treason. She was just 22 years old. Herta Lindner was murdered on March 29 1943 in Plötzensee. Her father Heinrich was executed fourteen days later.

This stele this small bronze monument is a stark reminder. A reminder of the sacrifice of a young woman who dared to resist. Her legacy lives on not just in this small memorial but in the quiet courage it represents. It stands as a beacon of hope a monument to a life lived in defiance. It whispers of the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom. It reminds us to never forget Herta Lindner.
