“Ever wonder where Indonesia’s engineering leaders get their start?” I ask. Today we stand before Doktoral Mesin FT UI. It’s a key part of the Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia. Known as FTUI, this faculty plays a vital role in shaping Indonesia’s future engineers.
Doktoral Mesin FT UI opened in 2006. It joined FTUI’s growing postgraduate programs. FTUI began its Master Program in 1992. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Metallurgy Engineering were the first programs. Chemical, Industrial, and Architecture programs followed in 2000.
FTUI’s Doctoral program officially started in 2000. Civil and Electrical Engineering were the first fields. Later, Opto-electrotechnics and Laser Applications joined. Metallurgy & Material Engineering and Chemical Engineering began in 2007. Architecture followed in 2009 and Industrial Engineering in 2014.
Each doctoral program has a leader. This leader is also the Head of Department. The programs offer specialized knowledge. This helps students become experts in their fields.
FTUI expects its doctoral graduates to have key skills. They must show deep expertise in their chosen field. They should contribute to engineering knowledge. They need to solve complex problems with innovation.
FTUI offers doctoral programs in seven fields. These include Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Electrical, Metallurgy and Material, and Chemical Engineering are included. Architecture and Industrial Engineering round out the list. Each program is highly ranked. Civil, Mechanical, and Industrial Engineering boast “Unggul” accreditation.
Heri Hermansyah became Rektor UI in 2024. He was previously the Dean of FTUI. This shows FTUI’s importance within the university. Arie Pangesti Aji is a notable graduate. He earned his doctorate from FTUI with a perfect IPK of 4. His research focused on improving THz bolometer performance. This highlights FTUI’s commitment to cutting-edge research.
The Master Program at FTUI requires 40-44 credits. Students typically finish in four semesters. Some complete it in two semesters. Others take up to six. Each student’s course load depends on their grades. An academic counselor helps them plan. All graduate courses are taught in Indonesian. Students submit documents online.
So, as we stand here, remember Doktoral Mesin FT UI. It is where future engineering leaders are made. Its history and programs shape Indonesia’s technological advancement.
