“Did you know that the cornerstone of this magnificent church was laid by Emperor Pedro II himself?” The Comunidade Católica Nossa Senhora da Glória stands before us a testament to faith and imperial patronage. Its story begins not with a single stone but with a decree. In 1834 an imperial decree created the Nossa Senhora da Glória parish. This was a significant event. It carved out a new parish from the overcrowded São José parish. This new parish covered a vast area. It extended to the borders of the Gávea neighborhood.

The parish needed a church. The Irmandade do SS Sacramento de Nossa Senhora da Glória stepped in. Founded in 1835 this brotherhood initially used a private chapel. This chapel was dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres. It belonged to Sergeant-Major Antônio Joaquim Pereira de Velasco. The chapel served as the temporary home for the Nossa Senhora da Glória church.

A small chapel on Rua das Laranjeiras played a role. Queen Carlota Joaquina had it rebuilt. She reportedly attended services there. She sought absolution for her sins. The queen lived nearby in Botafogo. This chapel’s ownership changed hands due to legal issues involving the Bank of Brazil and Queen Maria II of Portugal.

The Irmandade da Glória acquired the chapel. They paid two contos de réis for it. The brotherhood moved the religious images to this new location. A grand procession marked the occasion. Emperor Dom Pedro II himself attended. So did his sisters Princesses Dona Januária and Dona Francisca.

The small chapel proved inadequate. The growing congregation needed a larger church. The Irmandade secured land on Largo do Campo do Machado. The land belonged to Domingos Carvalho de Sá. The land was between Rua das Laranjeiras and Rua Gago Coutinho. The impressive cornerstone laying ceremony happened in 1842. The Emperor presided. The Bishop blessed the event.

Construction was slow due to limited funds. The chapel-mor was completed in 1856. The church was fully inaugurated in 1872. A grand celebration marked this momentous event. Bishop Dom Pedro Maria de Lacerda blessed the building and its religious images. The church’s architectural details are noteworthy. Its beautiful Roman columns and imposing staircase are impressive. This beautiful church with its rich history continues to serve the community. It embodies faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Rio de Janeiro.
