Hidden amidst Bremen’s Oberneuland district, Landgut Holdheim whispers tales of time. Landgut Holdheim started as a simple summer house. In 1809, Senator Johann Friedrich Abegg transformed it. He commissioned Hinrich Kaars to build a grand, classicist manor house. The surrounding landscape park, designed by Isaak Altmann, completed the idyllic scene. Landgut Holdheim wasn’t just a home. It was a “Geerengut”, situated on land originally granted by the archbishop. These estates, positioned at the edges of the fields, often served as fortified retreats in the Middle Ages. Abegg’s vision for Landgut Holdheim was one of peace and beauty. The estate’s name, meaning “lovely home,” came from a friend, Pastor Dräseke. The name perfectly captured its charm. Over the years, Landgut Holdheim changed hands. Around 1854, George Gloystein replaced the wooden columns of the portico with stone ones. He also added grape houses and even a small vineyard. Later, Dr. Gustav Woldemar Focke, a nature enthusiast, brought rare plants to the park and built a unique dry-stone grotto. In 1904, Landgut Holdheim took on a new purpose. Carl Schütte donated it to the Children’s Hospital Association. A children’s convalescent home was built on the grounds, with the manor becoming its administrative center. The estate expanded further with the De-Voß House in 1909, but sadly closed in 1937. During World War II, the grounds were used as a labor camp and training facility. After the war, Landgut Holdheim became the Klinik Holdheim, a lung hospital. Expansions and renovations, however, led to the destruction of parts of the historical garden. The clinic eventually moved to Bremen-Ost, and Landgut Holdheim housed a Japanese international school for a time. After years of vacancy, the clinic buildings were demolished, and parts of the land were sold for housing. The manor house found new life as luxury apartments. Today, a small portion of the original estate has been restored as a public park, Holdheim Park. Visitors can still experience some of its original beauty, from the restored grape houses and grotto to the ancient trees that whisper Landgut Holdheim’s story.
