New Birth Baptist Church

“Did you know that New Birth Baptist Church started in a home?” New Birth Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith and community. It all began on November 11 1964. Reverend George W Pryor and thirteen others formed New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. They were guided by the Holy Spirit. They chose the name New Birth. Their first service was in the Pryors’ home. Sister Alma Pryor taught children in the bedroom. Reverend Pryor preached to adults in the living room. Imagine the intimacy. Imagine the dedication. This humble beginning is a cornerstone of the church’s story. The church then purchased property at 3601 S Fitzhugh Avenue. The move to Fitzhugh in March 1965 marked a significant step. The congregation grew rapidly. They even had a Youth Choir and a Senior Choir. Brother Oran Pryor led the Usher Board. Reverend Claudell Pryor led the Sunday School. Sister Jacquelyn Dozier was the first secretary. Pastor Pryor himself wore many hats. He was the driver janitor and even the evangelist. He even performed the first wedding. The church’s growth led to a move to a larger building at 2946 Idaho Avenue. This move in 1969 accommodated their expanding membership. By the early 1970s attendance at Sunday services grew to around 500 people. The sanctuary was always full. Further expansion was needed. They added a wing for more seating. The parking lot was expanded. The church continued to grow. They paid off the mortgage in 1983. A mortgage burning ceremony celebrated their achievement. Then Pastor Pryor had a vision for a larger more modern space. In 1982 thirteen acres of land were purchased. Construction began soon after. The new church at 444 W Ledbetter Drive opened in 1984. It included a Jesus Center which housed a daycare senior programs and community events. The Jesus Center’s opening was a major event. Dignitaries and Dr S M Wright Sr attended. In 2004 the church paid off the mortgages for both the sanctuary and Jesus Center. The church continues its mission. Rev Michael D Pryor the founder’s son now leads the congregation. He carries on his father’s legacy. New Birth Baptist Church stands as a beacon of faith a testament to perseverance and a vibrant community center. It’s a place of worship and a place of history.
