Did you know that the Shanghai Xu Zhimo’s former residence stands as a testament to a literary giant? It quietly awaits discovery on Nanchang Road. This is where the famous poet Xu Zhimo once lived. The Shanghai Xu Zhimo’s former residence is more than just a building. It is a portal into the life of a man who shaped modern Chinese literature.

Xu Zhimo was born in 1897 in Haining, Zhejiang Province. He was a bright student. He studied at several universities including Shanghai University and Beijing University. His pursuit of knowledge led him to the United States. There, he studied at Clark University and Columbia University. He later went to London University for a refresher course.

He began writing poetry in 1921. His style was influenced by Western culture and the Aesthetic School. He returned to China and taught at prestigious universities. These included Beijing, Tsinghua, and Pingmin universities.

Xu Zhimo co-founded the Crescent Society. He toured Europe with Rabindranath Tagore. Upon his return, he penned poems, essays, and stories. He published his first collection called Poetical Works by Zhimo.

His poetry celebrated love, ideals, and freedom. He also expressed concern for the poor. His essays like “Sunrise Atop Mount Tai” are also well-known. He translated Katherine Mansfield’s stories into Chinese.

In 1927, Xu Zhimo moved to Shanghai. He taught at Guanghua and Daxia universities. He also spent time teaching at Central University in Nanjing. He co-founded the Crescent Book Store with Hu Shi and Liang Shiqiu.

He visited Cambridge, England in 1928. It was his third time there. There he wrote his famous poem “Say Goodbye Again, Cambridge!” It is admired for its rhythm and beauty.

Tragically, Xu Zhimo died in an aviation accident in 1931.

The Cultural and Historical Records Committee is advocating for better protection of notable residences. This includes the Shanghai Xu Zhimo’s former residence. Many feel current regulations are too vague. They lead to an unfair approach regarding which homes receive protection. Residences with less impressive buildings are often neglected.

Xu Zhimo’s father was an open-minded national capitalist. He founded businesses. These included a silkworm factory and a cloth factory. Xu Zhimo was close to his family.

He wrote patriotic essays. These reflected his concern for his country. He also valued friendship. After his death, he was remembered as “everyone’s friend.”

The Shanghai Xu Zhimo’s former residence stands as a reminder of his life. It connects us to his legacy. His words continue to resonate with readers today. As you stand here, remember the poet. Remember his passion. Remember his contribution to Chinese literature.
