Is there a better place to be than Mount Greenwood Park on a summer day? Mount Greenwood Park is a beloved green space here in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood. It stands as a testament to the community’s resilience and spirit. In the mid-19th century, German and Dutch farmers laid down roots in this area. They couldn’t have imagined the transformation their farmland would undergo. In 1879, a surveyor named George Washington Waite received an 80-acre land grant. He named it Mount Greenwood, inspired by the trees on a local ridge. Little did he know this name would one day grace one of Chicago’s 77 community areas. As the community of Mount Greenwood grew, so did its need for recreational spaces. The booming post-World War II era saw a demand for parks. The Mount Greenwood Civic Council stepped up, recognizing the need for leisure and recreation. They advocated for acquiring vacant land along 111th Street, envisioning a community gathering place. The Chicago Park District listened. In 1949, they purchased the 24-acre site that would become Mount Greenwood Park. But it wasn’t an overnight transformation. The park evolved slowly and steadily over the years. In 1966, a fieldhouse was constructed, becoming a hub for community activities. A swimming pool followed in 1973, offering a respite from the summer heat. The 1990s ushered in a wave of improvements. A soft surface playground emerged, capturing children’s imaginations with its airport and train station themes. Then came a refrigerated ice-skating rink, ensuring winter fun. Mount Greenwood Park honors its own. A parking area is dedicated to Frederick G. Abrams Sr., a prominent local figure. He served as a Chicago Alderman and Treasurer of the Village of Mount Greenwood from 1918 to 1927. And for baseball enthusiasts, there’s Rooney Field, named after Rooney Richardson. Richardson, who passed away in 1982, was a pillar of the community. His legacy lives on in every swing of the bat and cheer from the stands. Mount Greenwood Park isn’t just a park. It is a reflection of the community’s journey. It is a place where history, recreation, and community spirit intertwine.
