“Gift of Henry & Diana Chung Family 1981.” That’s what the inscription says on the China Beach Stone. This stone stands as a monument to the Chinese fishermen. They once camped in this cove. Welcome to China Beach.

Since the Gold Rush era, this cove served as a campsite. Chinese fishermen worked in and around San Francisco Bay. They supplied the needs of a growing city. Their efforts helped establish one of the area’s most important industries and traditions.

China Beach itself is a small sandy cove. It sits between Lands End and Baker Beach. This hidden gem is in San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood. The beach faces north. It offers views of the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate.

The story of China Beach is tied to the history of Chinese immigrants. They arrived in California in 1849 seeking fortune in the Gold Rush. However, they faced discrimination and resentment. Laws like the Foreign Miners’ License Act of 1850 targeted them.

Many Chinese were forced out of the goldfields. Some turned to fishing in San Francisco Bay. By 1875, 25 Chinese shrimp camps dotted the bay’s shores. China Beach was one of several camps outside the Golden Gate.

Despite their success, discriminatory regulations continued. These included bans on traditional attire. There were prohibitions against hiring Chinese workers. They were not allowed to become naturalized citizens. Immigration from China was forbidden.

Ironically, China Beach was once named Phelan Beach. This was after San Francisco Mayor James D. Phelan. He was known for his anti-Asian views. The State of California bought the beach in 1933 with a gift from Phelan.

In 1974, the National Park Service took over. They recommended changing the name back to China Beach. This recognized the history of Chinese immigrants in the area.

In 1982, Chinese Americans erected the monument. It commemorates the fishermen. The China Beach Stone stands as a reminder of their contributions.

Today, China Beach offers a unique experience. You can access the beach via a paved path or stairway. There are picnic areas. The views are breathtaking.

At low tide, you might even walk to Baker Beach. Starfish, anemones, and mussels cling to the rocks. Remember though swimming is not recommended because there are no lifeguards on duty.

China Beach is more than just a scenic spot. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. Take a moment to reflect on the stories etched into this cove. Think about the Chinese fishermen who once called this place home.
